A serger is a companion to the sewing machine. Sergers use between 2 and 5 threads to sew, and have a blade for cutting away the seam allowance of the fabric. If you want to see a serged seam, take a peek at the seams of a commercially made t-shirt. Sergers are particularly useful for sewing knits, as the multi-thread stitches are flexible and allow for stretch while also binding the raw edges of the fabric to stop fraying.
